Historically, the couch and sofa are two different things. The word “couch” comes from the French word “couche”, which means “lying down”. While the word “sofa” comes from the Arabic word “suffah”, which means “wooden bench covered with blankets and cushion”. The difference between them had to do with arms—or lack thereof. Oxford Languages definitions show that couch stands for “a long upholstered piece of furniture for several people to sit on,” and sofa stands for “a long upholstered seat with a back and arms, for two or more people”. However, the industry standard uses the term “sofa” in their products. Thus, rather than saying “couch”, you can use “sofa” to be more formal. |
